This article is based on a lecture presented to the Honourable Society of the Cymmrodorion in June 2022. The lecture was divided into two parts, the first giving an overview of some of the artists from Wales who travelled to Italy between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Richard Wilson, William Parry, Thomas Jones, John Gibson, Penry Williams, Mary Charlotte Lloyd and Calvert Richard Jones, and asking what made them travel there.
