Ffrwyth y pro ad ysgytwol o weld, yn Amgueddfa Avebury yn y 1940au, ysgerbwd merch ddeuddeg oed (fel y tybid ar y pryd) a ddarganfuwyd ar sa e Neolithig Windmill Hill gerllaw yw cerdd bwerus Waldo Williams, ‘Geneth Ifanc’.1 Fel y’n hatgoffwyd gan R. Geraint Gruffydd mewn ysgrif ar y gerdd, y mae hi hefyd yn fyfyrdod ar ddwy golled deuluol drasig: marwolaeth geneth ifanc arall, sef chwaer y bardd, Morvydd, yn 1915, a hithau’n nesu at ei thair ar ddeg, a marwolaeth Linda Llewellyn, gwraig Waldo, ar 1 Mehe n 1943, ychydig dros ddwy ynedd wedi iddynt briodi.2 Wrth drafod pennill olaf ‘Geneth Ifanc’, tyn Gruffydd sylw at yr ‘eco gweddol eglur’ a glyw yno ‘o gân serch gan y bardd o Sais, A. S. J. Tessimond’.3 Y tu ôl i linellau enwog Waldo – ‘Dyfnach yno oedd yr wybren eang[,] | Glasach ei glas oherwydd hon. | Cadarnach y tŷ anweledig a diamser | Erddi hi ar y copâu hyn’4 – fe saif, fe ddadleua Gruffydd, linellau agoriadol pennill olaf cerdd A.
