GWERTHFAWROGIAD O YSGOLHAIG CYMRAEG

This article outlines the career of Welsh scholar Professor Stephen
Joseph Williams and evaluates his contribution to Welsh life and
letters in the twentieth century. He was born in 1896 in Blaen-y-gors
near Ystradgynlais, the eighth of nine children. His education was
interrupted by the Great War, in which he served as a member of the
II Gurka Rifles. Returning to university studies after the war he was
appointed in 1927 as lecturer in Welsh at the new University College
in Singleton Park, Swansea, where he was to spend the whole of his
career. His original interests lay in the Welsh texts of the Middle
Ages but his published work covers every period of Welsh literature
and some of his greatest popular achievements are in the fields of
modern grammar and lexicography.
