DAVID LLOYD GEORGE AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR

The purpose of this article is to examine the attitudes and reactions of David Lloyd George to the course of the Second World War. Although he had continuously been out of office since October 1922, there seemed to be some prospect at various points during 1940 and 1941 that he might well return to a position within the government, possibly even as Prime Minister. While his numerous critics and detractors regarded his attitude as overly negative, even defeatist, the complexity of his responses and his contribution to the Allied war effort are examined in some detail here.
