‘Catrin o Eurlliw Irllwyth’: Catrin o Ferain a’i Hynafiaid a’r Beirdd
Diolch yn fawr i’r Cymmrodorion am y fraint o gael traddodi’r ddarlith hon, braint arbennig i mi gan fod y ddarlith yn coffáu’r disgleiriaf o’m rhagflaenwyr yng nghadair Gymraeg Aberystwyth, Syr T. H. Parry-Williams, gŵr y mae’n hynod gymwys cofio amdano mewn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn Wrecsam yn sgil y gamp arbennig a gyflawnodd yma gant namyn un o flynyddoedd yn ôl.
Fe hoffwn ddweud gair am bwnc y ddarlith i ddechrau. Efallai y bydd rhai ohonoch yn meddwl fod y ddarlith wedi ei chamamseru braidd, gan na chynhelir yr Eisteddfod yn Ninbych – calon bro Catrin o Ferain – am ddwy flynedd arall. Ond mae pobl o’m cenhedlaeth i yn dal i feddwl yn nhermau’r hen sir Ddinbych; nid y sir Ddinbych ryfedd bresennol a gipiodd Y Rhyl a Phrestatyn oddi ar sir y Fflint ac Edeirnion oddi ar sir Feirionnydd ond a gollodd Wrecsam, ond yr hen sir Ddinbych fel yr oedd tan 1974. Yr oedd bro Catrin o Ferain a Wrecsam fel ei gilydd yn cydorwedd yn gyfforddus o fewn ffiniau’r sir honno. Mae un o’r cymeriadau yn nofel R. Cyril Hughes Catrin o Ferain yn cwyno, ‘Dembisheiar ydi popeth rŵan.’2 Er gwell neu er gwaeth, mae cysgod y ‘Dembisheiar’ honno – yr hen sir Ddinbych – wedi dylanwadu ar fy newis o bwnc i draethu arno yn Wrecsam heddiw.
